Dr. Sanjay Khurana is a board certified adult and pediatric spine care specialist. After earning his B.A. in molecular and cellular biology from the University of California at Berkeley, Dr. Khurana received his medical degree from the Stanford University School of Medicine, where he also completed a general surgery internship and an orthopedic surgery residency. He was fellowship trained in spinal reconstruction at the Jackson Memorial Hospital in conjunction with the University of Miami/Project to Cure Paralysis. 
 
His area of expertise lies in spinal reconstruction, cervical spine surgery, minimally invasive microsurgery, adult and pediatric scoliosis, spine trauma and tumors, and the evaluation and treatment of patients with multiple failed previous surgeries. In addition, Dr. Khurana is a distinguished member of the Society of Lateral Access Surgery that helps define and advance the science and art of lateral access surgery and particularly, the XLIF procedure (eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion), a side approach for lumbar fusions that are performed on an outpatient basis at D.I.S.C.   
 
Having performed over 1700 spinal surgeries spanning the entire spinal axis, Dr. Khurana is a highly regarded spinal surgeon and has earned many national and international distinctions for spine research, including the 1999 Volvo Corporation Award for the Clinical Study of Low Back Pain and the 2000 Orthopedic Hospital Research Award from the California Orthopedic Association. Dr. Khurana was previously chief of spine surgery at Permanente Group San Diego and now is an esteemed member of the D.I.S.C. spinal care team.
